PepsiCo India Opens Smart Choice Cafes
With a perspective to expand it product line further, PepsiCo India is now planning to open café outlets in New Delhi and 4 other cities of India by the end of 2010.

Its first café outlet named as ''Smart Choice'' was launched in Chennai recently to promote its health segment - which was marketed under the brand name - ''Snack Smart''.

The café offers a range of choices for consumers like - Quaker muffins, Quaker Idly, Tropicana 100 % smoothies, Nimbooz, coconut mint mocktails (all are brand under the PepsiCo.).

The company is also eyeing to open a gymnasium very soon.

The company has joined with the Centre for Nutrition Counseling, Research and Extension Activities at Women''s Christian College (Chennai) for this project. Its Café will cater to students on the campus for healthy breakfast choices.

The company expects that this initiative would not only push its own products but it will also act as an incentive for its consumers to eat healthy foods and stay fit.

Ms. Mallika Janakiraman, vice-president (health and wellness) of PepsiCo India said PepsiCo has always partnered with different stakeholders in promoting good nutrition and healthy lifestyles, and this is yet another milestone in a continuous endeavour to do better than its best to be part of a solution to make tomorrow better than today.

The objective now is lifestyle and not just pure consumption and this could lead to a trend wherein the target would not be just a place in the consumer''s life - in the kitchen or in the cabinets - but the consumer''s life itself.

PepsiCo has been sharpening its focus on the health segment over the years. However, Indra Nooyi, Global chairman of PepsiCo, has announced the company''s ideas to focus on the health segment and it plans to increase substantially the contribution of this segment to the overall turnover of the company.

Meanwhile, PepsiCo India posted its highest volume growth in a decade - with its beverage business surging over 32% in calendar year ''09.

India topped beverage volume growth in the Asia as well as Mid-East and Africa region, at 32% in the year. During the October-December quarter too, India was the highest-growing market in terms of volumes - at 21%.

According to PepsiCo India Chairman Sanjeev Chadha, the growth was attributed to a combination of factors that includes category momentum as well as easy accessibility of products, greater value for money and significant investments through the year.
