28 People Mostly Children Drown In Bihar Boat Mishap (11-Aug-2010)

As many as 28 people, mostly children, drowned when a country boat capsized in the swollen Tilyuga, a tributary of the Kosi, in Supaul district of Bihar yesterday evening.
District officials in Supaul told NetIndian over the telephone that 22 others who were on the boat managed to reach safety.
The tragedy occurred near the Barmottar Ghat in the Marauna police station area of the district, where the people in the boat had gone to attend a "shradh" ceremony. The mishap occurred when they were returning hme.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1,50,000 to the next of kin of each of those killed in the mishap, the officials said.
Senior district officials and rescue teams, including personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), had rushed to the spot soon after news about the incident was received at the district headquarters.
While 25 bodies were recovered by late last night, three bodies were recovered in the early hours of today, the officials said.
