Mr Vinod Kapoor, Chairman, Organising Committee said that the fifth international seminar on wheat will focus on enhancing the productivity in States other than Punjab and Haryana and also achieve the Millenium Development Goals. The states of Punjab and Haryana are having the productivity of 4.21 tonne a hectare, while the productivity in States such as Madhya Pradesh as well as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal is around 2.7 tonne a hectare. Moreover, he said that in the country today, land around 25 million hectares are sown with wheat, out of which 17 million hectares are outside Haryana and Punjab. He also added that a comfortable levels of wheat stocks can be reached within the country, if the productivity in these states can be improved in the next four to five years. He said that the production of wheat this time is expected to be good and the government should seek help of the storage houses etcetera in advance.
