कमी की वजह से गन्ने को कर्नाटका से बाहर बेच दिया गया। देश गन्ने में गन्ने की कमी ने गन्ने के स्रोत को मिलों के बीच प्रतिस्पर्धा का नेतृत्व किया गया है। महाराष्ट्र और गोवा में कई मिलों ने कर्नाटक के सीमावर्ती गांवों के किसानों से गन्ना खरीदने का सहारा लिया जिससे सीमावर्ती क्षेत्रों में मिलों को नुकसान मे सहारा मिले। चीनी उद्योग के सूत्रों ने कहा कि, खानपुर मे भाग्यलक्ष्मी सहकारी सक्कारे कारखाने, होसपेट मे भारतीय शर्करा और रिफाइनरीज लिमिटेड जैसे सीमा क्षेत्रों में अपने क्षेत्रों, से गन्ने के परिवर्तन के कारण गन्ने की कमी का सामना कर रहे हैं। हालांकि, किसानों की ओर से जो वो चाहते है मिल मे गन्ने की आपूर्ति करने के लिए दबाव नही है। सूत्रों ने कहा कि "मीलो और साथ ही किसानो के बीच अपने व्यापार मे अनुशासन होना चाहिए। अपने क्षेत्र में किसानों की आपूर्ति मिलों को गन्ने जब तक, मिलों को गन्ने पर्याप्त नहीं कर सकते। नहीं तो किसान अपने ही क्षेत्र मे मिल्लो को गन्ना प्रदान करेंगे, जिससे मिलो को सही मात्रा मे गन्ना नहीं प्राप्त हो रहा।"

Many mills in Maharashtra and Goa have resorted to buying cane from farmers in the border villages of Karnataka thereby causing loss to mills in the border areas. Mills in border areas like Bhagyalaxmi Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane in Khanapur, Indian Sugars and Refineries Ltd in Hospet are facing a shortage of cane due to diversion of cane from their regions, sugar industry sources said. However, there is no compulsion on the part of farmers from supplying cane to the mill they want. "There must be some discipline among mills as well as farmers in their business. Unless farmers supply cane to mills in their region, mills cannot get enough cane," sources said.
