The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has warned banks to decrease investments in mutual funds. However, in December, banks have pulled out more than Rs 1 lakh crore from MF instruments with the largest fall in exposure seen in the fortnight ended January 1, where banks' investment went down to Rs 42,428 crore from Rs 1,47,279 crore. AP Kurian, chairman of AMFI stated that they have seen redemption in the month of December while it generally happens as corporates and banks have to meet their tax pre-payments. Meanwhile, the recent pick in credit off-take could have also prompted banks to redeploy these funds to instead meet the credit demand. The demand for bank credit has picked by over Rs 1 lakh crore over the same period and bankers admit good credit growth has helped them prune their mutual fund investments.
