Railway revenue earnings surge 13 4 in August 2010 (08-Sep-2010)
The total approximate earnings of the Indian Railway zoomed 13.4% to Rs 7740.7 crore in August 2010 compared to Rs 6825.4 crore in August 2009. This was the highest growth recorded in last one year compared to 18.5% growth recorded in October 2009.
The higher growth in earnings was driven by strong 29.3% growth in passenger earnings to Rs 2430.4 crore during August 2010. The total approximate number of passengers booked stood at 653.3 million in August 2010 compared to 611.9 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.8%.
Meanwhile, the goods earnings, accounting for nearly two-third of the total earnings also increased at decent pace of 8.0 to Rs 4971.6 crore. However, the earnings from other sources declined 1.3% to Rs 338.73 crore in August 2010 compared to Rs 343.32 crore in August 2009.
Among the other sources of earnings, the revenue from other coaching rose 8.0% to Rs 204 crore, but the sundry earnings plunged 12.8% to Rs 135 crore.
