PM To Ink Extradition Treaty With S Arabia
Issues of security and fighting extremism in the region are expected to dictate parleys between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and leaders of Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Arabian leaders are also likely to sign an extradition treaty during the former''s three-day visit to this country later this week.

However, Singh will lead a high-level delegation of senior ministers, officials and businessmen to Saudi Arabia on February 27.

He will hold talks with King Abdullah on several bilateral and regional matters of mutual concern.

The Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Talmiz Ahmad stated that other than the situation in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen, the talks will also have a spotlight on Palestine.

Meanwhile, he also said that security cooperation will comprise the basis of their dialogue.

He also said that both countries are tremendously worried about the increase of extremism and violence, threatening their security.

Ahmed said both India and Saudi Arabia are conscious of the connectivity of extremist forces that have refuge and safe haven in the Af-Pak border area and are also looking to break through other countries of the region.

On the other hand, the 2 countries will ink an extradition treaty, a number of MoUs and agreements on transfer of sentenced persons, scientific and technological cooperation, peaceful use of outer space and cooperation in the IT sector.

Previously, Indian and Finland have signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday in order to promote the cooperation as well as exchange of information pertaining to the Information Security Sector in accordance with relevant laws and regulations of each country and on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit.

The MoU was signed by the Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Mr. A. Raja, and Minister of Communication Finland -Ms. Suvi Linden.

The agreement that becomes effective on the date of signing will remain inforce for a period of 5 years.

Moreover this month, India and Bangladesh entered into an agreement where the cooperation between the two nations was strengthened further in the power sector after te countries gave a final shape to the agreement for setting up a 130-km power transmission link with an estimated cost of Rs. 882 crore.

It will be operational in 2 years or by July 2012 where Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) would invest Rs. 178 crore while the balance would be borne by Bangladesh.

Besides this, India and Japan have agreed to jointly develop a ''solar city'' in India and also strengthen their cooperation in research and development for promoting renewable energy.

However, the announcement was made this month after a meeting between New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah and Japanese Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Kazuhiro Haraguchi.

The ''solar city'' will be developed under a project in order to develop 34 such cities across India, which has been given in-principle approval by the government.

Meanwhile, the project is part of the government initiative to produce at least 10% of the total energy demand through new or renewable energy sources.

India and the UK also sign key deals in higher education in order to boost bilateral relations.

However, 5 Memorandums of Understanding will be inked in the presence of India''s Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and Lord Peter Mandelson, Britain''s Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Meanwhile, the co-operation will include a tie-up with Imperial College, a science-based establishment and the world''s 5th ranked university.
