India’s coffee export surge other major producer struggle (09-Aug-2010)

Coffee exports from India, during the current crop season is growing at a fast pace while other countries namely Brazil, Vietnam, Columbia etc are witnessing a negative growth during the same period.
According to the trade sources, the coffee consignments from India has surged to 2.27 lakh tonne in the first 10 months of the current crop season ending July 2010, up by 47% compared to 1.55 lakh tonne exported in the same period a year ago as a result of increased production in 2009-10 and higher crop estimation for 2010-11.
The major coffee producers in the world were struggling to report increase in coffee export during the first eight months of the coffee year ending May. The global exports of coffee has declined by 8.1% to 61 million bags due to fall in coffee production on account of unfavorable climatic conditions, while exports from India increased by 42.64% to 2.96 million bags (60 kg a bag) during the same period.

Exports from the world’s top coffee producer Brazil tumbled by 7.6% to 20.15 million bags during the same period while exports from the second largest coffee producer Vietnam declined by 22.6% to 10.31 million bags. Similarly, coffee exports from Colombia dropped by 26.30% to 4.78 million bags while exports were down by 21% to 1.5 million bags during the same period in Peru. Costa Rica’s coffee exports fell by 31% to 0.69 million bags and EI Salvador declined by 13% to 0.83 million bags.
Coffee exports from India had surged by 53% to 1.78 lakh tonne in the first seven months of this year, compared with 1.16 lakh tonne in the same period last year. The countries which account for most of the coffee exports from India are countries such as Italy, Russia, Germany and Belgium.
According to the Coffee Board post-blossom estimation, India is likely to produce 3.08 lakh tonne of coffee in the forthcoming crop season starting in October. The total production for the next coffee season is likely to include 2.08 lakh tonne of Robusta and 99,000 tonnes of Arabica.
