Govt To Ensure Availability Of 581 MMSCMD Of Gas For Power Projects (18-Aug-2010)

The Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Jitin Prasada, has informed the Rajya Sabha that the government is taking every possible step to ensure that the requirement of 581 million standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) of gas for power projects is met. He said “as of today power projects in the country require 581 MMSCMD of gas, but it is not available. It is a priority area for the government and we are making efforts to make it available.â€
The minister also assured that India has the ability to generate power in abundance that can not only suffice the local demands but also enable the government to supply power to other nations. He elucidated “if we get this much quantity of gas, then India will be able to generate 1,21,000 MW electricity and we will be able to even supply power to other nations.â€
The minister emphasized on the fact that providing gas for fertilizer plants was another obligation for the government and added that the government has been trying hard to sort out problems like shortage of supply of gas and it has kept prime focus on eastern and southern regions. Power plants situated in the regions of Uttar Pradesh, which is in the ministry’s priority list, are also being provided with gas.
The minister also threw some light on the natural gas extracts from KG D6 field and said that its apportioning is decided by the empowered group of ministers (eGoM) which was formed to deal with issues related to commercial usage of gas. He stated “since the demand to meet the shortfall of existing assets in different sectors is more than the available gas, the eGoM has decided that KG D6 gas will be first allocated to existing plants.â€
