19 Growth In April Aug 2010 In India s Spice Exports (29-Sep-2010)

Buoyed by a revival in world economy that is boosting demand, spice exports of India have registered an increase of 19% in the April-August period of the current fiscal to Rs 2,600 crore over the same period last fiscal. In terms of volume, it stood at 2,39,850 tonnes, compared to 2,11,950 tonnes in the year-ago period. Around Rs 2,190 crore worth of spices that includes pepper, chilli, ginger and garlic among others were shipped out from India in the first five-months of the last fiscal.
Meanwhile, it was chilli again who scored top among other spices in exports. According to latest data released by the Spices Board of India, chilli exports in the first five months of the current fiscal stood at 102,750 tonnes, up 35% over the same period last fiscal. Value-wise also, it has outpaced others to garner foreign exchange worth Rs 631.74 crore against Rs 467.6 crore in the April-August period of the last year.
Chilli was followed by garlic and ginger exports, the prices of which are currently touching skies within the country in the last few weeks. Garlic exports have witnessed a whopping 327% of jump to 13,250 tonnes during the April-August period of the current fiscal over 3,100 tonnes in the same period last year. Further, exports of ginger also surged 163% to 4,150 tonnes from 1,575 tonnes during the April-August period of the last fiscal.
Though appreciation in rupee and change in export-import policy of India was expected to cause some harm to the exports, the damage was minimized because of increased overseas demand.
