Natural Rubber Production Up 4.6% In Apr-Jan 2012
Natural rubber production in January 2012 was up 3.7% at 1.02 lakh tonnes. Production for the April-January period was at 7.84 lakh tonnes, an increase of 4.6% over the year-ago period, as per the figures released by the Rubber Board. Consumption of natural rubber went down during January 2012 by 2.4% to 82,000 tonnes from 84,000 tonnes in the previous month. Cumulative consumption increased by 1.3% during April-January 2012.

The Board has estimated production for February to fall sharply to 61,000 tonnes while the forecast for March is even lower at 59,000 tonnes. Further, the Board estimates that total stock at the end of January 2012 are 2.67 lakh tonnes against 3.34 lakh tonnes at the end of January 2011. Moreover, it is reported that good production can be expected only in the June/July season with the dawn of the next rainy season.

Consumption for now has inched up by just 1.23% in January. Whereas exports from the country have declined, imports were up by over three times. The country has adequate stocks of rubber estimated at 267,000 tonnes. The Board has also revised upwards the production for December 2011 from previous estimates of 1,04,000 tonnes to 1,06,800 tonnes.
