Cotton production likely to slump to 321 lakh bales for 2018-19

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has further slashed the cotton output estimate to 321 lakh bales for the 2018-19 cotton season, about 7 lakh bales lower than its previous month's estimate. It is the lowest level since the 305 lakh bales recorded in 2009-10, and a decline of about 12% from previous fiscal.

Water scarcity in the major growing areas is stated as the main cause for the contraction in crops. Farmers uprooting their cotton plants in 70-80% of the area without waiting for third and fourth pickings, also been pointed out by the CAI.

CAI also foresee a dip in exports for the season (October 2018-September 2019) at 47 lakh bales, against last year's projection of 69 lakh bales, and also a hike in imports this year at 27 lakh bales, against last year's estimated 15 lakh bales. Meanwhile, domestic consumption of the fibre is estimated at 316 lakh bales for the season.

Stock at end March is projected at 93 lakh bales including 45.85 lakh bales with textile mills and remaining 47.15 lakh bales with the Cotton Corporation of India and others in the industry.
