Sugarcane growers threaten stir (11-Feb-2010)

From February 20, the Karnataka State Sugarcance Growers' Association has threatened to launch an agitation before chief minister's residence in Bangalore, if its demands are not met by then.
According to the association president Kurbur Shantakumar, on Wednesday it is said that the farmers are pressing for implementation the State Advisory Price (SAP) for sugarcane and the chief minister had promised to do so.
It is promised by the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa at the meeting with growers that steps would be taken to implement SAP and with the same he said that so far, there has been no move in that direction.
Adding to it he also said that the association which met here has decided to launch an agitation in front of CM's residence from February 20 if the demands were not met.
Shantakumar said Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh implemented SAP and it should be followed by Karnataka. The president said there was a discrepancy in fixing the price of sugarcane.
Though the factories in Ghataprabha in Belgaum district offered Rs 2,700 per tonne and the factories in Mandya and Mysore offered Rs 1,600 per quintal. He also appealed the farmers to work out moderation in sugarcane cultivation and advised them to limit the product.
Shantakumar said the statement was irresponsible about attacking Union minister for agriculture Sharad Pawar for his alleged advice to the people not to consume sugar in the wake of skyrocketing prices.
