Jute Mill Workers Call Off Strike
In West Bengal, the strike has been called by the Jute Mill workers effective from February 14, 2010 as their demands related to dearness allowance and wage increase were accepted by the mill owners.

From December 14th , the workers in about 50 jute mills went on strike in support of fulfilling their demands like unfair labour practices as well as payment of statutory dues, clearance of arrears of dearness allowance, regularization of contract workers and deduction of provident fund, among others.

Totally there are 73 jute mills in India, around 59 are in west Bengal and the remaining 50 are running. On the other hand, Sanjay Kajaria (chairman of the Indian Jute Mills Association) said that with the sugar and food grain packaging season almost over and the jute mills were left with minimal orders in hand in the ensuing season.

Previously the plastic bags are widely used this season for food grain and sugar packaging because of the strike.

Jute Packaging Materials Act (JPMA) of 1987 has made it mandatory to use jute bags to the extend of 100 per cent for packing of the two commodities.

The entry-level daily wages of workers has been increased to Rs 157 from Rs 100 under the terms of agreement.

Adding to it he said the arrears in the dearness allowance would settle in the six installments which will take another three years according to the agreement.

The jute mills have decided to pay off the last drawn wages to the retired workers in case on re-employment and also with this, there wont be any contractual in jute mills for permanent jobs.
