Industry Mulls Export Of Cashew Kernel To Russia (18-Feb-2010)

To tide over the setbacks that the cashew Industry has suffered in the traditional markets, a 10 member cashew industry delegation led by Mr. Harikirishnan Nair, Vice-chairman of Cashew Export Promotion Council (CEPC) would commence their 11 day tour on 6th March.
The delegation will make a visit to Russia and Kazakhstan to explore the potential of these markets and to examine whether cashew kernel could be exported to these countries.
Infact, former Soviet Union was one of the largest importers of cashew kernels from India in the past and the cashew kernel export to this region has increased substantially.
In 1981, the export of cashew to former Soviet Union stood at 24,180 tonne, which was almost 72 % of the total export from the country.
An industry spokesman said as of now, there was a ban on agriculture products export to Russia. Now that the ban has been withdrawn and India can step up its exports to the region.
As a major competitor, Vietnam also affected the prospects of cashew exports from the country.
The cashew industry is facing a reduction in exports in its traditional markets like - U.S.A and Europe. The exports stood at 82,053 tonne during April - December, 2009. It was estimated at 84,079 tonne during the corresponding period of the preceding year.
Last year, the industry exported 109,523 tonne of cashew valued at Rs. 2,988.40 crore.
To achieve a higher growth in exports this year the industry delegation had earlier visited Asian countries like - Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam.
