India’s Import Bill For Pulses At Rs 21 000 Crore During FY08 10 (10-Aug-2010)
India’s import bill for pulses stood at over Rs 21,000 crore during the last three financial years, as indicated by the Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. The world’s leading producer of pulses imported 8.8 million tonnes of pulses between the financial year 2007-08 and 2009-10.
The country imported 2.8 million tonnes of pulses worth Rs 5,374 crore in FY08 to meet the demand-supply mismatch while the figure stood at 2.48 million tonnes (Rs 6,246 crore) in FY09 and 3.5 million tonnes (Rs 9,813 crore) in FY10.
The local demand for pulses was at around 17-18 million tonnes during last three fiscal years against the production level of 14-14.8 million tonnes.
