Govt Rice Procurement For Central Pool Fell 3 Percent At 24 MT (09-Mar-2010)

Following the lower production, the procurement of rice by the government for the central pool fell by 3 per cent at 23.8 million tonnes (MT) so far in the 2009-10 season ending September this year.
The government had procured food grain of 24.63 MT in the same period last season, as per the data maintained by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the nodal foodgrain-procurement agency for the Central pool.
The fall in procurement is on account of lower production of rice during the Kharif season due to the twin impact of drought and floods, a government official said.
According to the FCI, the purchase of rice is higher in Punjab as well as Haryana and Chattisgarh, but lesser in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.
Meanwhile, the government has a target of buying 26 MT of rice in the current season. However, in the 2008-09 season, the government had bought a record 33.68 MT.
As per the data, FCI and other state procurement agencies have bought 9.26 MT of rice so far in Punjab as compared to 8.39 MT in the same period last season.
However, the purchases in Chattisgarh surged from 2.51 MT 3.17 MT, while that of Haryana it grew from 1.4 MT to 1.81 MT in the review period.
However, the purchase of rice in Andhra Pradesh fell from 4.26 MT to 3.17 MT, while in Uttar Pradesh, it declined from 3.34 MT to 2.41 MT and in Orissa it fell from 1.63 MT to 1.45 MT in the review period, the FCI data showed.
Meanwhile, India is estimated to produce 87.56 MT of rice this year as compared to 99.18 MT last season.
The country needs rice of 27.20 MT in order to run the public distribution system (PDS) for a year.
Meanwhile, the government earlier this month has partially lifted the ban on export of non-basmati rice by allowing its exports to Sri Lanka and Nepal with a ceiling on diplomatic grounds to keep the friendly ties with neighbours.
This move from the government comes after almost nearly two years of the ban on export of non-basmati rice due to the fears of domestic shortage of rice from 2008.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification late on Wednesday, which states that the existing ban on export of non-basmati rice would not be applicable to export of 20,000 tonnes of rice (Ponni Samba) to Sri Lanka through Project Export Corporation (PEC) while another 25,000 tonnes through MMTC form the country with immediate effect.
