Domestic Rice Production Likely To Touch 100 mt Mark This Season (18-Aug-2010)

The domestic rice production is likely to touch new high this season on the back of improved monsoon rains and quality seeds being distributed by the government to farmers. President of All India Rice Exporters’ Association Vijay Setia has indicated that the country’s rice output may be around 100 million tonne (mt) during the twelve months period ending June 30, 2011 against 89.3 mt in the year ended June 30, 2010.
Though the recent flood in the eastern parts of the country has taken its toll on the rice plants, rise in area under sowing is likely to compensate for the same. Farmers have already bought 27.4 million hectares of land under rice plantation till last week as compared to 25.1 million hectares in the year ago period.
The bumper crop may also result in the Centre relaxing the ban on rice export which was initiated two years back to tame inflation. With recent floods destroying most of the rice crop in Pakistan - one of the leading rice exports of the world, India stands to gain from rising demand from international markets.
In a separate development, the government, on Tuesday, relaxed export norms for basmati rice. As per the new parameters, farmers can now export basmati rice of 6.61 mm length against earlier 7 mm length while length-to-breadth ratio has been revised to more than 3.5 mm from earlier more than 3.6 mm.
