Cashew Apple Products To Hit Markets Soon
With an effort driven by the CRS (Cashew Research Station) under the Kerala Agriculture University (KAU) to popularise the processing technology of cashew apple products, drives to launch of a series of Value Added Products from cashew apple which would hit market shortly.

Professor - Jose Mathew, Head of CRS, of KAU (Madakkathara) said at present, almost the entire cashew apple's supply from the cashew plantations in the state is wasted and in this context the CRS has started a processing centre to provide training and technology to entrepreneurs. The annual production of cashew nuts in the state is approximately 60,000 tonne. The production of cashew apple is around 6 lakh tonne. The CRS has now developed a range of products like - cashew apple syrup, candy, pickle and ready to serve products which includes - juice, mixed jam etc. The other products like carbonated drinks, vinegar and cashew apple wine etc are being developed by CRS.

Mr. Jose Mathew said cashew apple is a rich source of Vitamin C. Besides, the cost of the fruit is also very reasonable.

The total supply of cashew apple in the country is nearly 80 lakh tonne. Where, only a small share of it is used at present.

He said that 3 units in the small sectors have adopted the processing technology of the CRS. While, another unit called Tomco Fruit Products supported by Krishi Vigyan Kendra has started production in Kannur.

Jose Mathew also said that there is a good demand for technology and training from other states like - Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Also the demand for the product is very good.
